This week, not much occurred. The most of my time was spent trying to secure more interviews for the future as I am still looking for a mentor. However, this slower week has offered me some time to look into the coming weeks of what I need to get done.
The biggest thing I focused on this week was refining my idea for the Final Product. I want to analyze media through a social psychology lens. This will require me to get familiar with media psychology, or the way that people interact with media. My investigation in media psychology will be focused on specifically entertainment media. One theory I came across while researching was affective disposition theory. ADT theory suggests that people judge characters in film and media based on their morals. Ultimately, the audience wants good things to happen to morally “good” characters and bad things to happen to “bad” characters. While I can think of situations where this theory applies, I can think of just as many examples that contradict this theory. In fact, in much modern media, the protagonist or most like character does not have perfect morals. I want to investigate why this is the case and what it reveals about people.
Researching media psychology was also valuable as it gives me another topic to discuss in my upcoming 20 minute speech. There are many new concepts I have learned about media psychology that I look forward to sharing with my classmates and peers.
