This past week was dedicated entirely to preparing for the business symposium coming up on Thursday the 5th of October.
One of the things we practiced for the symposium was preparing an elevator pitch. Because the symposium will involve us communicating with other students and professionals whom we have not met before, it is important to have a way to introduce ourselves. I found it particularly challenging to condense the past few months of work and research into a 30 to 60 second speech. Because of how short an elevator pitch is, I had to really think about what I wanted people to know about me so they could get a good understanding of who I am and what I want to do.
A lot of the business symposium requires a level of adaptability and improvisation. This is especially true during the interview portion of the symposium. I anticipated using my questions more often during the interviews, but as we were practicing for the interviews in class, I found that I was only sometimes referring to my list of questions. Most of the time I would ask a question based on the response to the previous question. This felt more like a natural conversation and required me to actually listen to what the other person was saying rather than thinking about what I was going to ask next.
After all the practice and preparation I have done this week, I feel more prepared for the business symposium.
