This week I gave my 20-minute speech about my original work and my ISM research as a whole. While there are always areas of improvement, I feel happy with how my speech went. Creating and practicing the speech also had many benefits. First, I got a better idea of just how long time can feel when talking, helping me mentally prepare for the 30-minute speech I will have to give at the final presentation night. Additionally, I also had to organize all my work so far which helped me realize just how much I have learned.
It also helped me understand my purpose and end goal of all my work. So far it felt like I was simply learning and sharing new information, but now I have a clearer understanding of what benefit my work will create. My goal, for both the original work and final product is to address the issue of mental health and social isolation that I noticed was a commonality in all my research as I organized my speech.
The speech also helped me plan my poster board that I will have to work on this coming week. The poster, much like the speech is meant to be a consolidation of my research. Since I had already done most of that for the speech already, I have a head start for my poster board.
Things have been slow in terms of getting more interviews and finding possible a mentor. As I start on the final product I need to ensure that I can do it myself as I can’t guarantee a mentor’s support throughout that process. With the more research based project I have planned for my final product, I am confident that I can accomplish that well with my own skills. Whenever I can find a mentor, I hope to have some product to show them and get feedback on the conclusions I have drawn.
